Russian Plane Crash – No Survivors Found
MOUNT SALAK, Indonesia: Russian Plane Crash – A rescue team didn’t find any survivors among the 45 bodies found on Thursday, when they arrived on the scene after a Russian plane crashed into a mountain in Indonesia.
The exhibition flight was the first passenger jet coming from the Soviet Union since its fall – a Superjet 100 aircraft, disappeared on Wednesday around 40-miles south of Jakarta.
On the plane were Indonesians, which included businessmen and journalists; eight Russian passengers which included technicians, pilots and embassy officials; 2 Italians; 1 French citizen; and 1 American, according to the head of Sukhoi Civil Aircraft, Vladimir Prisyazhnyuk.
Spokesman for the search and rescue team, Gagah Prakoso, told Indonesia’s Metro TV that they didn’t find any survivors.
Air-traffic control lost radio contact with the plane around 0800 GMT on Wednesday after the aircraft fell to 6,000 feet close to Mount Salak which; according to a rescue official, rises to 7,254 feet above sea-level.
On Thursday, a search began and later a rescue helicopter noticed debris on the dormant side of the Mount Salak volcano, and sent multiple search teams on a journey across heavily forested, steep terrain to get to the crash site.
A photograph shot from the helicopter looks as though the air plane hit the peak of a nearly vertical rock wall. Small portions of white debris was seen distributed down an open stretch of the mountain cliff.
President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono stated at a news conference that the Russian plane crash site was located on the edge of Salak mountain, and a thorough investigation will be completed, immediately.
