Oscar Pistorius, known as the “Blade Runner” for his Paralympian sprint championships, was arrested and charged on Valentines Day with murder after police found the body of a dead woman at his South African home.
The woman was not officially identified by the police as super model Reeva Steenkamp, but it is believed to be by the media since she was romantically involved with the athlete. According to police sources, the 30-year-old was shot four times and was dead when police arrived.
The South African police did not identify Oscar Pistorius as the perpetrator either.
Police spokeswoman Katlego Mogale said.”We found a 9 mm pistol at the scene. A 26-year-old man was taken into custody.”
Initially it was speculated that she was shot after she surprised her boyfriend on Valentines Day; however, police said the incident was being treated as a murder investigation and also said that there had been previous calls to the house described as “allegations of a domestic nature.”
Brigadier Denise Beukes said that police were “very surprised” by the suggeston of a burglar, and told reporters at the scene: “These allegations did not come from us.”
According to Beukes, there weren’t any signs of forced entry.
According to a police officer, Pistorius was co-operating with police.
Yesterday, Miss Steenkamp tweeted about Valentine’s Day saying, “What do you have up your sleeve for your love tomorrow??? £getexcited £ValentinesDay”.
Apparently, Pistorius, 26, had serious concerns about his safety in his home and it has been said that he sleeps with a gun near his bed.
A journalist working at the Daily Mail interviewed Pistorius last summer and made a note that Pistorius had said that because of the violence in South Africa he had one cricket bat and one baseball bat behind his bedroom door. A machine gun near his window and a gun beside his bed.
Oscar Pistorius’s father said his son was “sad” following the shooting of his girlfriend.
