Madonna Gets High Scores For Style – Substance Not So Much
Madonna Concert Review: Madonna is more enjoyable than Bruce Springsteen, according to a review by Noah Love in the National Post Sept 13.
Love called Madonna’s set for the sold-out-show at the Air Canada Centre Wednesday night, “draw-dropping fantastic.”
Although the writer didn’t compare the Queen of Pop with the Boss, he points out that they have three things in common for sure. First, they both became famous in the 80s; secondly, each has won a truck load full of Grammys, and they both headlined ballparks within the last three weeks.
Springsteen and the pop queen have nothing in common as performers, but Love thinks Madge is the better bet to shell out money to see. He says he feels weird about saying that, because her musical theater version does not execute the music in the best way possible.
Her show brings two entities together – style and substance – which should rely on each other, but Love feels that her style scores much higher than her substance.
Style
Madonna’s show, was split into four sections, each one having a different look and feel. The reviewer called it one of the top three visual shows; he’s ever seen.
There was a massive catwalk that went almost all the way to the centre of the ACC arena, which made the gigantic building seem tiny. Madge had a team of tumblers and dancers who were constantly around, but didn’t up stage the 54-year old centre-piece. The set itself and the set pieces were so well-done, that they almost completely stole the spot-light.
Substance – Musical Performance
According to Love, it’s hard to say how much Madonna was actually singing, because she was so buried in auto-tuner for the majority of her songs, except for Like a Prayer, Express Yourself, Human Nature and Holiday.
Love sums it up by saying that one would never attend a Madonna concert for the music alone. She continues to put on a good show while stripping down to her bra and thong.
