Internet Usage And Tech Lifestyle Relative To Household Income

24 November 2010, U.S. News – Pew Research has studied Internet usage and tech-powered lifestyle relative to the household income of Americans. Usage and adoption of technology is highly determined by earnings.

The findings for Americans living in households with annual incomes of $75,000 or more reveal:

- 95% access the web “at least occasionally”

- 99% in this category access the web from home

- 93% of this higher income group have high speed internet

- 79% have desktops

- 79% have laptops

- 95% have mobile phones

- Likelihood of having iPods, game consoles, e-readers, and tablets is significantly higher than lower income earners

The findings for Americans living in households with annual incomes below $75,000 indicate:

- 70% access the web “at least occasionally” (down to 57% for household income levels below $30,000)

- 93% in this category access the web from home

- 85% of this higher income group have high speed internet

- 55% have desktops

- 47% have laptops

- 83% have mobile phones

Amongst the factors considered in determining Internet usage and tech adoption were: household income, age, education, race, gender and community type. Income was the only factor that showed significant and distinct differences in technology use.
